Apple fell to second place due to a 23 percent drop in its shares, making Microsoft the world's most valuable public company. Microsoft was worth $2.64 trillion, while Apple's market capitalization was $2.59 trillion.

The market is being hit hard by President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff plan, and Apple is the hardest hit among big tech companies due to the iPhone maker's reliance on China. Apple and Microsoft, along with chipmaker Nvidia, were worth more than $3 trillion before the recent sell-off.
